At 80, he gave up his peaceful life and creates a distressed animal shelter

The Leslie Robinson's story is so touching and inspiring. This former American consultant is 70 years old when he left the US to lead a peaceful retreat in the Himalayas.

But fate decided otherwise so: during his journey, he stopped by the town of Tiruvannamalai, located south of India. There, he learns that the local authorities plan to shoot stray dogs to secure the streets. Upset by this information, he abandoned his original plan to try to help the animals.

"I could not leave," says Leslie. The pensioner then activates to save the lives of hundreds of dogs. Asked by the website The Better India, he says:

The only condition imposed by the authorities so that this mass murder did not take place: someone can resolve the situation by supporting canines. Result: instead of staying 10 days, as planned, in Tiruvannamalai, this father of three will remain there until the end of his life.

In January 2007, Leslie thus created Arunachal Animal Sanctuary and Rescue Shelter, a sanctuary to house all animals abandoned, injured or in need of care. The refuge now treats about 800 animals each month, employs 23 people full-time, three veterinarians, and received the help of many volunteers.

The septuagenarian is not content to accommodate animals in distress. He gradually developed programs of sterilization and vaccination campaigns against rabies, in addition to providing an emergency service day and night. Originally intended to dogs, all kinds of animals are now welcome to the sanctuary.
